Raed Khoshaba is one of the most prominent musicians and composers in the Arab world, having left a distinctive mark on the history of Eastern music and the development of oud education. He began his musical journey at the Institute of Musical Studies in 1985, where he started learning the oud under the guidance of Professor Salim Abdul Karim, who predicted from the very beginning that he would have a distinguished future with the instrument.
During his studies, he performed with the Al-Bayraq Ensemble—founded and directed by the late great Munir Bashir—in a wide range of concerts within Iraq, particularly during the annual sessions of the Babylon Festival. He also participated in many of the ensemble’s international tours, such as the Jerash Festival and performances at the opera houses in Cairo and Istanbul, in addition to giving musical performances in several cities across the Soviet Union.
He graduated in 1992 from the First Institute of Musical Studies as the top student in his class. In 1997, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Music from the Academy of Fine Arts at the University of Baghdad. Just one year later, he traveled to Jordan, where he performed in numerous concerts. In 1999, he released his first album, titled “Strings of the Soul,” which achieved remarkable success through Music Box Records, topping the album sales charts for that year. Since 2000, Raed Khoshaba has been based in Germany, where he has continued his rich artistic career. Between 2002 and 2006, he founded a school for teaching the oud in the Belgian city of Liège and launched several musical groups, such as the Baghdad band, which released its album through Pan Records, and another named Uruk. His work has shaped a unique musical dialogue that blends flamenco guitar and the oud. His career also saw the release of his third album, “Maqamat al-Sharq,” in 2008, while he formed the “Eastern Jazz” band, which incorporated various instruments such as the saxophone, clarinet, and percussion. With this group, he produced a new album titled “Omnia” in 2010.
In 2009, he founded a new band called “Oud Night” in collaboration with three jazz musicians, presenting a new musical experience that blended traditional melodies with contemporary rhythms. A year later, he oversaw a modern adaptation of Jamil Bashir’s project titled “The Lyre, the Oud, and the Guitar,” a tribute to the musical legacy created by one of the greatest oud players. He released this project as an album under the umbrella of “Oud Records,” a label he founded himself in 2013.
His career was further enriched by a collaboration with Italian composer Pino Giudici and his band to produce an additional album released by Alfa Music in 2012
In 2015, he resumed work on a previously launched but temporarily suspended project to revive all the compositions of the Turkish oud virtuoso Şerif Muhieddin Haydar. These compositions were later released on a CD accompanied by a comprehensive book that employs the best modern methods of musical notation and explains innovative techniques for playing the oud. What sets Raed apart is that he performed all the musical pieces composed by Sharif, including those that had not been previously notated or whose sheet music was lost.
In collaboration with the Cultural Office of the City of Essen, Raed founded a private school for teaching the oud and Eastern music in 2016. This school has become a gathering place for lovers of Eastern music of all ages and skill levels, offering a pioneering educational experience that goes beyond mere listening to a deep engagement with musical heritage. He published the first volume of his comprehensive instructional book, *The Oud Curriculum*, in 2018, followed by the second volume, continuing his contributions to the development of this authentic art form.
رائد خوشابا هو واحد من أبرز العازفين والمؤلفين الموسيقيين في العالم العربي، الذين تركوا بصمة مميزة في تاريخ الموسيقى الشرقية وتطوير تعليم العود. بدأ رحلته الموسيقية في معهد الدراسات الموسيقية عام 1985، حيث بدأ تعلم العود بإشراف الأستاذ سالم عبد الكريم ، والذي توقع له منذ البدايات بمستقبل مميز مع العود
أثناء فترة دراسته، شارك مع فرقة البيارق والتي أسسها وكان يشرف عليها الراحل الكبير منير بشير، في مجموعة واسعة من الحفلات الموسيقية داخل العراق خاصة في الدورات السنوية لمهرجان بابل. كما شارك في العديد من جولات العالمية للفرقة مثل مهرجان جرش، دار الأوبرا في القاهرة وإسطنبول، إلى جانب تقديمه لعروض موسيقية في عدة مدن تابعة لدول الاتحاد السوفييتي
تخرج عام 1992 من معهد الدراسات الموسيقية الأول على دورته. وفي عام 1997، نال درجة البكالوريوس في العلوم الموسيقى من أكاديمية الفنون الجميلة في جامعة بغداد. بعدها بعام فقط، سافر إلى الأردن حيث أقام العديد من الحفلات الموسيقية. وفي عام 1999، أطلق أول ألبوماته بعنوان "أوتار الروح"، الذي حقق نجاحًا لافتًا عبر شركة "ميوزيك بوكس"، حيث تصدر مبيعات الألبومات لذلك العام. منذ عام 2000، استقر رائد خوشابا في ألمانيا وواصل هناك مسيرته الفنية الغنية. ما بين عامي 2002 و2006، أسس مدرسة لتعليم العود في مدينة لييج البلجيكية، وأطلق العديد من الفرق الموسيقية مثل فرقة بغداد التي أصدرت ألبومها عبر شركة بان ريكوردز، وأخرى حملت اسم أوروك. تولت أعماله صياغة حوار موسيقي فريد يجمع بين غيتار الفلامنكو والعود. كما شهدت مسيرته إصدار ألبومه الثالث "مقامات الشرق" عام 2008، في حين أنشأ فرقة "الجاز الشرقي"، التي دمجت آلات متنوعة مثل الساكسفون والكلارينيت وآلات الإيقاع. ومعها، أنتج ألبومًا جديدًا بعنوان "أومنيا" في عام 2010
في عام 2009، أسس فرقة جديدة بعنوان "عود نايت" بالتعاون مع ثلاثة موسيقيين جاز، مقدّمًا تجربة موسيقية جديدة مزجت بين الألحان التقليدية والإيقاعات المعاصرة. بعد ذلك بعام، أشرف على نسخة حديثة من مشروع جميل بشير بعنوان "القيثارة والعود والغيتار"، وهو تكريم للإرث الموسيقي الذي صنعه واحد من أعظم عازفي العود. أصدر هذا المشروع كألبوم موسيقي تحت مظلة شركة "أُود ريكوردز"، التي أنشأها بنفسه عام 2013
كما تكاملت مسيرته بتعاون مع الملحن الإيطالي بينو جوديتشي وفرقته لإنتاج ألبوم موسيقي إضافي صدر عن شركة ألفا ميوزيك عام 2012
في عام 2015، أعاد العمل على مشروع أطلقه مسبقًا لكنه توقف مؤقتًا، لإحياء كافة مؤلفات عبقري العود التركي شريف محيي الدين حيدر. تلك المؤلفات صدرت لاحقًا ضمن قرص موسيقي مرفق بكتاب شامل يعتمد أفضل أساليب التدوين الموسيقي الحديثة ويشرح بأساليب مبتكرة للعزف على آلة العود. أهم ما يمييز العود أنه عزف كل القطع الموسيقية التي ألفها الشريف ، ودون ما القطع الغير مدونة سابقا أو نوتاتها مفقودة
أسّس رائد بالتعاون مع المكتب الثقافي للمدينة أيسن مدرسة خاصة لتعليم العود والموسيقى الشرقية عام 2016. أصبحت هذه المدرسة ملتقى لعشاق الموسيقى الشرقية بمختلف أعمارهم ومهاراتهم، حيث تقدم تجربة تعليمية رائدة تتجاوز حدود الاستماع إلى عمق التفاعل مع التراث الموسيقي. أصدر الجزء الأول من كتابه التعليمي الشامل "منهج العود" في عام 2018، ومن ثم تبعه بالجزء الثاني ليواصل إسهاماته في تطوير هذا الفن الأصيل
